Lots of posts about who Felassan is in the Masked Empire out there these days. All factual. All important. All leaving out his most defining trait.

Felassan is a fucking weirdo. He's so over everything. He says the most insane shit. When asked about it he pulls "idk, I'm Dalish?" out of his ass and doesn't even have the decency to make it sound true.

He eats bark, kids. All you Solavellan girlies out there need to know a couple of centuries of putting up with your man's bullshit leaves you chewing random pieces of bark and teaching stray lesbians to murder like it's a social experiment.

just finished reading The Masked Empire, and all I have to say is

justice for Felassan 😭

I started rereading bits of the Masked Empire because I wanted to collect some of my favorite Felassan quotes, and I am once again hit with so much frustration. Felassan and Briala are the most palatable characters from that story, yes. And I can't even say that some of their feelings about the Dalish are entirely irrational. For Briala, a lot of it is tied up in the whiplash of disappointment. But fucking hell, they are both just so wrong. I want to make an eloquent post about it but in this moment I can't.

Briala spends like a good paragraph just taking in the Dalish people living their every day lives, and the two of them conclude by calling them pompous assholes. The only one who in that moment is acting "pompous" is the Keeper due to the fact he's yelling at Felassan for bringing Briala's group to their doorstep.

A group consisting of a fugitive empress and an insanely racist chevalier. That an army is looking for.

Felassan and Briala put the lives of every one of those normal and minding their own business Dalish people on the line by bringing Celene there. The Keeper has every right to be mad about it.

And the way Briala pivots so hard from "I want to be Dalish" to "the Dalish don't live up to my day dreams? We should kill these idiots." Guhwjekekekeke

I hate so many things in this book but I hate Briala and Felassan's dialogues in the Dalish camp (and massacre of it) most.

I don't think the story is actually intending for the reader to walk away thinking the two of them are in the right. Briala is showing like ten levels of hypocrisy in any given moment from that point on. I think it's intended to be their character fault similarly to Celene's and Michel's insane character faults. But it does not make for an enjoyable read, and it does make truly liking them as characters really difficult.

Briala feeling bad for Celene after she had literally slaughtered the elves makes me so mad. She feels guilty rather than angry at Celene because she wasn’t there to guide her to make the right choice. Makes me feel awful for reuniting them in the winter palace.

This post will probably be huge cuz I wanna yap abt this so bad, I have so much to say.

Currently on The Masked Empire in my journey of reading the books and comics. And I wanna talk about it because so far this is absolutely one of my favorites, close to Asunder even.

I'm only a hundred and sixty or so pages through it, but I adore it. The in depth descriptions of what characters are wearing, the way you get to see Celene in action, Briala as well, calculating and playing the game. It's a fascinating. And I'll admit that as someone not super socially aware, I sometimes have to wait for the charcater to directly state what they've figured out because myself couldn't. It feels like whilst we've gotten obviously very smart characters before, we really get to in depth see the gears turning this time. Can you tell I love stories that have fantasy related politics?? Lol

Not to mention the relationship Briala and Celene have, it's so obviously problematic but at the same time I love it so much. In an odd way I feel almost seen by it? Not sure how to describe it but I love it. (I prolly just need to read more WLW books, haha)

Just, so far this book is so great, and I'm sure something horrible will happen, Inquisition seems to allude to it after all, but I love it anyways and cant wait to see what happens. Even if I desperately want Briala and Celene to be okay when they wont.
